  • Founded in 1965 in Los Angeles, California, Dollar Rent a Car was originally called “Dollar-A-Day-Rent-A-Car.”
  • The company’s first fleet of rental cars consisted of a few Volkswagen Beetles with manual transmissions and no air conditioning.
  • From the beginning, Dollar's philosophy has been to provide the public with a combination of the best service available in the industry at the most competitive prices possible.
  • In August 1990, Dollar was acquired by Chrysler and was made part of its Pentastar Transportation Group, Inc., along with Thrifty Car Rental and Snappy Car Rental in Tulsa (Snappy sold in 1994).
  • In November 1997, Chrysler sold Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. (DTG), successor by merger to Pentastar, in a public offering on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • In November 2012, Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: HTZ) acquired Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc.
  • Headquarters for Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty were relocated to Estero, Florida in 2015.
  • With 570 worldwide rental car locations in 61 countries, including more than 260 in the United States and Canada, Dollar serves value-conscious consumers around the world.
