Driving tips for a happy and safe holiday seasonTuesday, November 20, 2012 5:03:53 PM
The holiday season can be hectic: The months of November and December are known to include an onslaught of work commitment and social obligations. While running between business meetings and cocktail parties, it's important to keep road safety in mind.
The Better Business Bureau recommends preparing a car safety kit for your car rental. This kit will come in handy in the event of an emergency, and should include a blanket, flashlight, radio and batteries, jumper cables, non-perishable foods and a first aid kit.
It's also important to give yourself a time cushion when heading to holiday parties. Rather than leaving late and speeding, prepare ahead of time so that you can arrive at your destination safe and sound (and on time!). Don't forget the biggest irony of hurried road travel: According to the BBB, speeding increases the likelihood of accidents, which slow down traffic much more significantly than slow driving speeds.
It is also important to stay fully aware of both your own state of mind and others'. The holiday season is sadly notorious for its tendency to produce intoxicated and buzzed driving conditions. If you're planning on driving, skip the cocktails - but it's also important to be doubly aware of those driving around you. Practice defensive driving techniques in order to avoid becoming the victim of someone else's careless behavior.
