Los Angeles: Haven of modern architecture

The mid-century modern aesthetic has experienced a resurgence in popularity, and if you’re drawn to sleek lines and innovative design, Los Angeles is the perfect place to see some of the most influential works of modern architecture. By taking your Los Angeles rental car down Interstate 405 or up the historic Highway 101 you can visit and even tour some of the significant structures that are now considered to be landmarks. On the way, it’s easy to make a short detour to visit other attractions such as historic Wilshire Boulevard, the Santa Monica Pier or the Sunset Strip.

Eichler Homes
Take a drive in your Los Angeles car rental to Balboa Highlands, a neighborhood positioned at the northern limit of San Fernando Valley. It’s home to the only tract development of Eichler homes in Los Angeles. Joseph Eichler popularized modernist design through use of glass walls, high beams and open floor plans. California boasts impressive views and a temperate climate, making it the perfect location for homes that feature atriums, patios, gardens and swimming pools. Eichler is credited with being the first architect to popularize “bringing the outside in,” a groundbreaking concept for middle-class families in the 1950s.

Ennis House
Frank Lloyd Wright is known for being one of the most influential American architects of all time, and the Ennis House is a stunning example of his work you won’t want to miss while you’re in town. It’s conveniently located in Los Feliz, which is easily accessible by driving your Los Angeles car rental just north of downtown LA. The textile-block design is reminiscent of Mayan architecture, and while driving down Vermont Avenue, you’ll see it looming on the edge of the Santa Monica mountains. The view down from the Ennis House is equally impressive; panoramic views of Griffith Park and downtown Los Angeles provide a perfect backdrop for an impromptu photo shoot.

Adamson House
Get in your car rental in Los Angeles and spend some time taking in the spectacular Pacific Coast while visiting the classic Adamson House on the Malibu coast. Local artisans played a significant role in the development and furnishing of this home, as is evidenced by the inclusion of elaborate tiles produced by Malibu Potteries in the spirit of Spanish Colonial style. Malibu is home to red and buff burning clays, and the Adamsons capitalized on their rich colors by including them in tile work that adorns the hallways and foyer.
