History of the International Cherry Blossom Festival
The International Cherry Blossom Festival was established in 1982, when it was a meager three-day event. But its history goes back much further to 1949, the year that local realtor William A. Fickling Sr. discovered a Yoshino cherry tree - the first in the city - right in his own his backyard. He began to propagate the species, which was rare to the South, and give them to neighbors and friends who went on to plant them. Soon, the neighborhoods were overgrown with these lovely plants. The fest was later developed to highlight the cherry blossom's role in Macon's history as well as to promote "love, beauty and international friendship."
