History of Fiesta San Antonio

Fiesta San Antonio has its roots in a humble 1891 flower parade organized by the wife of a congressman to commemorate the heroes of San Jacinto and Alamo battles - it involved paraders throwing flowers at each other as they made their way around the Alamo Plaza. Within four years, it grew into a week-long event featuring carnival games, live musical performances, a march for the lost heroes of the Alamo and the throning of a festival queen, among other activities. Since then it has continued to thrive and grow each year - particularly in recent years, expanding from 11 days in 2013 to 18 days in 2014 - and is now a beloved San Antonio tradition.

Highlights of Fiesta San Antonio

This huge celebration attracts visitors from all across the country with more than 110 events, many of which take place in the main grounds in downtown San Antonio. One of the main activities is the crowning of the king and queen, whom are chosen by the  official Order of the Alamo and featured in the parades wearing expensive and glamorous royalty attire. Visitors can also experience the Pilgrimage to the Alamo, a traditional march dating back to 1925 that honors the heroes of the famous battle, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade led by local Boy Scouts and the Night in Old San Antonio festival that showcases local food, drink and music in an effort to raise funds to maintain the city's historic buildings.

But the highlight of the fest is the Battle of the Flowers Parade, the event that led to the founding of Fiesta San Antonio.
