Highlights for an exciting Iowa excursion

There's much more than just corn in Iowa. This Midwestern location is filled with a variety of lovely locales, from Ames to Sioux City. It's known for having a friendly population, and residents warmly welcome people from all around the world looking to learn about the Native American heritage, agricultural history and political roots of the destination. Many travelers book their flights to Des Moines Airport for access to the most bustling city in Iowa - it's filled with a stunning array of cultural institutions, dining options and nightlife activities. During your next trip to Iowa, be sure to check out these top Des Moines features:

Visit the museums

Once you've gotten your bearings after stepping out of Des Moines Airport, take some time to explore the top institutions of this city. It's home to the Des Moines Art Center, State Historical Museum and National Balloon Museum. One of the more unique spots is the Hobo Museum, located just outside of the city center in Britt. It teaches visitors about the role that these workers have played in forming the area's culture. In fact, the establishment is home to the annual National Hobo Convention held each August.

Check out the annual events

All throughout the year, Iowa's busiest city throws an impressive array of activities aimed at bringing the community closer together and attracting new faces to the locale. Depending on when you plan on arriving at Des Moines Airport, there's probably something exciting going on. In June, the downtown area is transformed into a cultural playground for the Des Moines Arts Festival, a three-day fair that attracts some 250,000 people each year and showcases works by more than 150 artists around the globe. Those who come in July can join in on the Taste of Des Moines, a weekend event that features food, wine, beer and other tasty treats from more than 40 local vendors. Then in September, the Salisbury Automobile Classic takes over the area, displaying some of the best collections of classic and antique automobiles in the country.

Along with hosting these fun fests, the city is home to one of the most popular events in the Midwest - the Iowa State Fair. It takes place each August and spans 10 days when about 1 million people gather to celebrate the area's rich agricultural roots with delicious food and drink. There's also live entertainment (acts such as Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan have taken the stage in the past) in addition to carnival rides and games.
