What to do when an auto accident occurs on business

You're out of town, away on business, and in one quick instant - your trip changes. As any business professional who has had the unfortunate experience of being in a car accident with a business car rental will tell you, the situation can often be more stressful than it would be with a personal vehicle.

Before traveling to a metropolitan area for business, individuals must look into what laws each state has regarding accidents that involve out-of-state drivers and rental cars. It is also good to investigate which laws from your own home state protect you in the event of a crash as well.

Getting the details - including insurance policy numbers - from all involved in the accident is key as well, since it will likely be much more difficult to seek out any of these details after you have returned home from the business trip.

Contacting your personal insurance, local law enforcement and the rental company as soon as possible is also a must. Different rental car companies will need different types of documentation - for example, some companies need individuals to document the damage if the car is still able to be driven and mark the date and time of the accident - so contacting the company immediately will allow you to collect all of the data you need before it is too late to do so.
