Don't bring these restricted items on a flight

3/24/2015 5:08:37 PM

Airline rules change all the time and it can be tricky to keep up. There are also plenty of rules that can be difficult to remember. Once you've returned your airport car rental, be sure to think about what's in your luggage. Do you have these restricted items in your bag? If so, throw them out before entering the airport.

Banned items

  • Bleach
  • Weed killer
  • Rat poison
  • Gasoline
  • Lighter fluid
  • Explosives
  • Car batteries
  • Fiberglass resin
  • Strong magnets
  • Aerosol
  • Spray paint
  • Tear gas
  • Chlorine
  • Strike-anywhere matches
  • Sharp objects
  • Knives

What to do if you realize you have these items at the airport
If you realize that you are carrying a container with too much liquid, head to the nearest bathroom or trash can and dump it out. If your toiletries are not contained in a clear plastic bag, there may be some available throughout the security line. In the event that you remember you have a banned item such as gasoline or a knife, be sure to tell Transportation Security Administration personnel immediately. Do not do so in a panicked way - simply tell security you forgot to remove the item from your bag and an agent will confiscate it. Depending on what the item is, you may be able to put it in your checked back. If not, you can ship the item to your house directly from the airport before you get on your flight.
