Tips for traveling alone on a business trip

5/6/2014 3:20:45 PM

Ideally, business travelers would hit the road with a colleague who could help with car rentals and hotel bookings, give directions and provide backup during meetings. But that isn't always possible. When you must travel alone, follow these tips to make your trip go more smoothly:

Keep in touch with family and friends
It can be easy to become lonely when out of town by yourself. It's important to embrace solitude sometimes, but when you're feeling homesick, turn to the telephone, Skype or other communication format to connect with those back home. And don't be afraid to get out and meet new people - go down to the hotel bar or restaurant and say hello to another solo traveler.

Stay safe
One of the biggest concerns for people traveling alone is safety. At night, be sure to stay in open, public places and avoid dark alleys. Have your directions ready before you leave for your meeting, restaurant or other destination so you don't find yourself standing on the street corner asking for help. If you have auto troubles on the road, it may be better to contact your airport car rental company for help rather than waving down strangers on the road.
