Save on transportation and dining business travel expenditures

Tuesday, October 2, 2012 3:08:18 PM

Business travel budgets can face challenges during economic downturns, but smart planning can alleviate monetary pressure. Although hotel, airfare and local tax costs are probably inevitable, business travel managers and money-conscious travelers can save money on costs like transportation and dining.

When planning transportation to and from business events, keep efficiency in mind. Corporate car rental is probably a must in most cities, but certain car-related variables can save you time and money. For example, USA Today business traveler David Grossman recommends paying attention to parking costs. Often, a parking garage's overnight rate is cheaper than the rate in nearby hotels. Seek out parking options that save money so you won't have to spend valuable cash on (often) exorbitant valet tips.

According to NBC News, business travelers should also pay close attention to their dining budgets. Tim Zagat, founder and publisher of Zagat Survey, shared some budget-friendly dining tips with NBC. Zagat recommended making lunch your heaviest meal of the day. Lunch costs can be 20 to 30 percent less than dinner costs, so eating more mid-day could add up to major savings. Make a meal out of your lunch hour and grab a cheap pick-me-up for dinner.
