    • Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
    • Personal Effects Insurance (PEI)
  • Protection Plus (PP)

Be sure to check with your current car insurance provider before buying additional rental car insurance, since many of these options may already be covered by your plan. You may also qualify for rental car insurance coverage through the credit card you use to book your reservations. Purchase of optional products is not required to rent a Dollar vehicle. Additional information on these products are also available at Dollar locations.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)

LDW is an optional service which covers all vehicle damage to the Dollar rental car, regardless of fault*, provided the renter is not in violation of the Rental Agreement. With LDW, there is no need to file a claim with your personal auto insurance and no deductible for you to pay to Dollar. There is a one-time fee added to your bill at the time of rental if you choose to purchase LDW.

Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS)

Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) provides you with up to $1,000,000 (up to $2,000,000 in California and Florida) of increased liability protection should bodily injury and property damage claims be made against you by people injured in an accident. LIS safeguards your insurance policy and/or your personal assets for the first $1,000,000 ($2,000,000 in California and Florida) should such claims be made against you. Liability Insurance Supplement also provides uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage up to $1,000,000 per occurrence for combined bodily injury and/or property damage claims.

Personal Protection Package (PPP)

Personal Protection Plan ("PPP") includes Personal Accident Insurance ("PAI") and Personal Effects Insurance ("PEI"). Where offered, they must be purchased together.

PAI provides coverage to you and your passengers for: accidental medical expenses, ambulance expenses, accidental death benefits during the rental, 24hr coverage during the rental period (whether in vehicle or not). Passengers in a Dollar vehicle are only covered for accidents occurring while they occupy the Dollar vehicle.

PEI insures the personal effects of: the renter, and any member of the renter's immediate family traveling with the renter. (A member of a renter's immediate family must permanently reside in the renter's household.) The total maximum coverage is $1,500. PEI pays covered claims even if the renter's homeowner's policy provides coverage.

Protection Plus (Canada)

In Canada, where available, if you purchase Protection Plus ("PP"), it will provide limited benefits to the authorized driver and passengers of the vehicle during the rental for: accidental medical expenses, ambulance expenses and accidental death, repatriation, rehabilitation, legal defense, emergency road service, mechanical breakdown, towing benefits, and loss to personal belongings if certain terms and conditions are met.

Dollar Top Car Rental Insurance FAQs

Do you need insurance to rent a car?

Depending on your personal auto insurance policy, you may already have adequate coverage for rental cars and therefore not need to purchase additional coverage. Be sure to check with your auto insurance representative before renting so you can ensure that you understand what your coverage provides. Dollar does offer many different optional insurance options and protection programs, and our representatives would be happy to speak with you about your insurance questions.

Is insurance included in my car rental?

Where permitted by law, no liability protection is provided under the terms of the Rental Agreement from claims of injury by others against you resulting from an accident with the rental car. Some locations provide primary protection under the Rental Agreement. However, in those situations where protection is provided by Hertz, such protection is generally no more than the minimum limits required by individual state law. For these reasons, some people feel more comfortable traveling with additional liability protection. That is why Hertz makes the Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) option available to you.

Will my car insurance cover a rental car?

This answer varies, depending on your insurance company and policy. Dollar recommends speaking with your credit card company or auto insurance provider to get an accurate understanding of your auto policy coverage, whether or not it covers rentals, and if you would be required to pay a deductible in the event of an accident.

What kind of insurance should I take if I rent a car?

The protection you need for rentals depends on many variables, including your current insurance plan. Dollar’s rental location staff would be happy to guide you through your rental car protection needs and answer any questions you have, to make sure you’re making the right choice for rental car coverage.

Do I need to show proof of insurance when renting a car?

No proof of insurance is required at time of rental.
