Atlanta Car Rentals
When you're in Atlanta, you should take some time to visit Athens, Georgia, a modern university town surrounded by classical architecture. Athens is famous for its early Georgian mansions and beautifully maintained gardens. Main Street looks like a pictorial postcard from the past. The scenery serves as a backdrop for a happening hotspot that offers cuisine, shopping and a rocking night life (it was the launching pad for the B-52's and REM). It is the perfect destination for a trip that is relaxing, informative and a just a little bit offbeat. Its 70 miles outside of Atlanta, so if you have an extra day, here are some things to see.
First, drive your Atlanta rental car to Stanford Stadium to see where "Bulldog Country" gets its name. The stadium is one of the greenest fields in college sports due, in part, to the privet Ligustrum hedges that line the interior of the structure. These emerald green landscaping landmarks are the reason the University of Georgia's football team, the Bulldogs, are said to play their games "between the hedges." The hedges have been in the stadium since the 1926 Rose Bowl, but in recent years, the college has paid over $30 million to have the facility renovated, adding a new upper deck and sky suites and bringing capacity to 92,746. Stop on by if you want to see the yard where the Bulldogs are let loose.
Terrapin Beer Company
After the game, you're going to need some refreshments. Starting from humble origins, two guys working on home brews, Terrapin Beer Company has now become one of Georgia's largest local beer providers. The company offers tours of this contender for the nation's top craft brewery as well as the opportunity to taste some of their unique flavor combinations (recommended: the coffee oatmeal stout). They have an indoor tasting area, featuring interior design crafted by local woodworkers that allows guests to try some fresh brews right off the line. If you're not big into beer, you might enjoy their large outdoor patio area that hosts a beautiful green landscape and live bands every Friday. The city of Athens provides visitors with other tours to learn more about local brewing. You can take part in the Thursday Night Drinking Club or a Saturday Brews Cruise, each experience will give you an inside look at four local breweries.
The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia
If you're looking for something a little more relaxing, take your Atlanta rental car to Milledge Avenue to visit the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. This garden and conservatory features 5 miles of walking trails through over 300 acres of plant life. Flora on display include dahlias, native azaleas and rhododendrons. One of the most fascinating collections is the Heritage Garden, which features classic landscaping (brick walls and symmetrical hedges of the early South), historical crops of the region, and pass-along perennials that are meant to be shared with future generations. The garden is not just beautiful but it is also educational. The University of Georgia has a conservatory on the grounds and the facility offers classes and events to inform visitors about the wonderful world of these gorgeous gardens.
