Rental Car or Taxi?

There’s no easy answer to this question because, depending on where you’re traveling, the balance sheet can change. But regardless of where you’re going, there are some rules of thumb you can use to help make your decision easier. So next time you’re faced with the rental car vs. taxi question, consider these:

Rent a car if:

  • You have control issues. If you hate being at the whim of taxi drivers or public transportation – or you simply must be at a certain location at a specific time and wouldn’t trust anyone to get you there but you.

  • You’ll be traveling long distances or places that are generally out of reach for public transportation (or would cost more than a day’s rental car to get there by taxi).

  • You’re carrying sports equipment, pets or other bulky items with you. Jamming your skis into a taxi, taking your dog on the subway or hauling home Aunt Edna’s antique armoire on the bus are no-nos. Instead, rent a car and you’ll get the freedom to pack them in any way you see fit.

  • Your destination’s public transportation leaves a lot to be desired.

  • You like to fly by the seat of your pants and go where the road takes you.

Hire a taxi if:

  • You’re traveling to a single, walkable location and don’t foresee any of the above scenarios.

  • You’re traveling to wherever “PARTY TOWN U.S.A” may be for you and no one in your group can be trusted to be the designated driver.

  • You don’t have a license, are under 21 or the daily parking fees at your hotel are cost prohibitive.

  • Have terrible navigation skills and can barely get around your own home town – much less a new city in a car that may or may not have a navigation system.
