Outdoor adventure
For a truly unique vacation, plan outdoor adventures - and there are plenty here. Even the youngest members of your family can take part in horseback riding or boating excursions. Travel to the 'Iao Valley, and after a drive on a winding road, you'll be in the mountain air. There's always a possibility of rain during your trip there, but it's still worth it because you'll still get to see the 'Iao Needle - a 2,250-foot basaltic core. You'll also be surrounded on either side by shield volcanoes. If you want to take some time to relax, there are plenty of beaches for that, too.

A piece of history
Your family members may claim they're tired of museums, but that's because they haven't seen the ones Hawaii offers. The Alexander Baldwin Sugar Museum is next to Hawaii's largest working sugar factory and features intriguing displays on how a sugar mill works and the sugar commerce in the area. People who like big machinery will enjoy getting up close to a historic steam locomotive and a trench digger that's big enough for a person to stand under! Drive your Kahului rental car to the Paper Airplane Museum, where you'll see all sizes of paper airplanes, many fashioned out of used cans.

On the road again
Take your Kahului car rental on the road trip of a lifetime through the hairpin turns and scenic landscapes of the world-famous Road to Hana.Makawao is approximately 20 miles southeast of Kahului, and is a popular destination because it resembles an old Western film. Everyone will enjoy visiting old-west style buildings and the rodeo amid sandy beaches and bright flowers. Hana is an isolated part of the island that will take you back in time and give you a glimpse into the state's past. The ride along Route 360 is full of hairpin turns, though, so drive slow and plan to make a day of the excursion.
