Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)

In most states, when you rent a car from Dollar, you are responsible for any and all loss or damage to the car resulting from any cause, including but not limited to, collision, rollover, theft, vandalism, seizure, fire, flood, hail or other acts of nature or God, regardless of fault.

When you purchase our Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), which is not insurance, you are relieved of financial responsibility if your rental car is damaged or stolen.

Benefits of the Loss Damage Waiver:

  • Covers all vehicle damage to Dollar rental car, regardless of fault*, provided the renter is not in violation of the Rental Agreement
  • No need to file a claim with your personal auto insurance
  • No deductible for you to pay to Dollar

*In IL, your financial responsibility for loss or damage to the rental car with an MSRP of $50,000 or less due to causes other than theft will not exceed $17, 500 through May 31, 2017 and will increase by $500 per year every June 1 thereafter. Your responsibility for theft will not exceed $2,000 unless it is established that you failed to exercise ordinary care while in possession of the rental vehicle or committed or aided in the commission of the theft. For a rental car with an MSRP of more than $50,000, your financial responsibility for loss or damage due to causes other than theft, and for theft, will not exceed $40,000 through September 30, 2016, which limit will increase by $2,500 per year starting October 1, 2016.  In CA, you are responsible for loss or damage resulting from collision, regardless of cause, and under certain circumstances, for vandalism and theft. In CA, NY, IA and NV, you are only responsible for theft if it results from your fault.

Loss Damage Waiver ("LDW"): If the renter purchases one of the optional LDW plans, DOLLAR will agree to waive the renters responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle in full or in part (depending on the LDW plan accepted). LDW is not insurance.

LDW does not apply if: (1) the renter uses the vehicle in violation of the Rental Agreement; (2) the renter fails to remove the keys, or close and lock all windows, doors and trunk, and the vehicle is stolen or vandalized; (3) the renter fails to notify us and the police immediately after the loss; and (4) the renter fails to pay the charges under the Rental Agreement; or (5) other exceptions as allowed by the applicable state or provincial law.

Before deciding whether to purchase LDW, the renter may wish to determine whether their own automobile insurance or credit card agreement provides coverage for rental vehicle damage or loss and determine the amount of the deductible under their own insurance coverage. The purchase of LDW is not mandatory. LDW is not insurance.
